Indigo Vat Kit Instructions

Supplies

+ Indigo Vat Kit

+ 4qt (1 gallon) bucket or pot

+ long stick/spoon

+ gloves

+ natural fabric or yarn such as linen, cotton, wool or silk

Each indigo vat  kit will dye up to 2 yards of fabric or 600g of yarn. You can dip additional fiber beyond that, but you will get lighter shades of blue.

Keep your indigo vat as air-free as possible. Do not splash or stir

forcefully, as you do not want to introduce any air bubbles (oxygen)

into the vat. Introducing too much oxygen can neutralize the vat

Do not use dishes or utensils used for eating. Wear Gloves.

Prepare your Vat!

Step 1 - Fill a 4 quart bucket or pot half way with warm tap water.

Step 2 - While gently stirring in a circular motion, add the soda ash & reducing agent into the vat

Step 3 - Continue gently stirring as you add in the indigo.

Step 4 - Once all materials are dissolved, slowly remove your stick/spoon from the vat and cover lightly with a lid.

Step 5 - Let the vat rest, covered, for 15-30 minutes

Your indigo vat will have a thin blue layer on the top, with a clear green/yellow liquid below. This is what you want!

Dye your Fiber!

Step 6 - Pre-wet your fabric, squeezing all of the excess water and air out before adding the fabric into your indigo vat. Gently add your fabric into the vat, taking care not to splash

Step 7 - Let the fabric sit in the vat for 3-5 minutes before gently removing from the vat. The fabric will look green until it begins to oxidize. Let oxidize for 10-15 minutes.

For deeper blues, dip in the indigo vat again, or multiple times, allowing the fabric to oxidize between dips.

Step 8 -Whenever you are satisfied with the color, rinse the excess indigo until the water runs clear, and wash with a mild detergent.

Your indigo vat will keep for several days if kept covered. You can continue to use your vat over several days until there is no color  left. You will notice the blues get lighter as you use up all of the  active indigo in your vat.

To discard of the spent vat, simply pour it down the drain or in the  toilet. It is a natural indigo vat, and there are no harmful chemicals.
